Orthodontics for children
An early orthodontic consultation can identify developmental irregularities in time and assess whether treatment should begin immediately or whether monitoring growth and development is sufficient.

When a child should see an orthodontist
A first orthodontic consultation for a child is needed when an irregularity in tooth position, bite or jaw development is noticed, but also preventively, at around 7 years of age, so that developmental anomalies can be identified in time. The goal of an early consultation is not always to begin treatment immediately, but to assess development and determine the right moment for the next steps.
Why is an early consultation important?
In children, some orthodontic irregularities can already be noticed and monitored during the growth phase and the transition from primary to permanent teeth. In certain cases, early treatment can help guide jaw growth, prevent an irregularity from worsening, or reduce the need for more complex treatment later.
What is assessed at the consultation?
- position and eruption of teeth
- space within the dental arches
- relationship between the upper and lower jaw
- bite and function
- signs of irregular growth and development
Does a child need braces immediately?
Not every child needs to start treatment immediately. In some cases treatment needs to begin earlier, while in others it is enough to monitor the child regularly until the next growth phase, which is better suited to orthodontic intervention. The decision is made individually.

What treatment options are available?
- 1
Monitoring development
If it is not yet the right time for treatment, regular check-ups to monitor changes during growth are recommended.
- 2
Removable and fixed appliances with orthopaedic effect
In certain cases, removable or fixed appliances are used to guide jaw growth.
- 3
Later orthodontic treatment
For some children, treatment is planned only at a later stage, when conditions are more favourable, for example once all permanent teeth are present.

A consultation adapted to the child
For children it is especially important that the consultation is calm, clear and age-appropriate. The parent receives an explanation of the diagnosis and a recommendation for next steps, while the child has a comfortable experience that does not create unnecessary fear or resistance to treatment.
The first step is a timely consultation
If there is a suspected irregularity in the bite or tooth position, an orthodontic consultation allows for a timely assessment and a clear plan for the next steps.

Frequently asked questions
Does a child need to have all their permanent teeth before seeing an orthodontist?
No. A consultation often makes sense earlier, precisely in order to assess development and determine whether treatment should start now or later.
Which irregularities are most commonly noticed in children?
These can include irregular jaw relationships, crossbite or deep bite, lack of space, irregular tooth eruption and other developmental anomalies.
Does a first consultation mean braces straight away?
No. In many cases the goal of the consultation is to assess the child's development and determine the right moment for possible treatment.
